Hi all. A question for the experienced welding inspectors and guru's.

I am an experienced welder/fabricator tradesman of 13+ years with experience in the mining, Power Station and Oil & Gas sectors. I have just completed my C10 welding supervisors and inspectors certification to AS2214 and AS1796. Welding Inspection is a direction of the welding/metal trade that I want to progress into.

My question is: What can I do to gain experience in this field or where should I start? as most jobs want 5+ years experience minimum. I want to eventually do short to medium term FIFO contract roles around Australia on construction jobs ( to AS2214 and AS1796). Involving mainly QA/QC inspection roles.

Also should I gain basic inspection experience first then get WTIA IIW, CWI certification, or would it be advantageous to aquire these qualification first.(I want to get them eventually)

I understand that Welding Inspection is a massively specialised field and not a simple process of go to TAFE, get certified and off you go.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    Inspector Gadget,
As with everything you have to serve an “apprenticeship” before you can get to where you want to go.
Try contacting one of the inspection agencies – Bureau Veritas (formerly CCI Pope), Pearl Street (formerly ETRS), DITS or Intico.
Explain what your intentions are (you want to progress to Welding Inspector) and if you are lucky you may be able to get a start or at least they can give you advise as to the best path to take.
The advantage of starting off with a recognised inspection agency is you gain the experience, looks good on the CV and most of the companies pay for your qualifications and training.
I started off 15 years ago, paid for my Welding Inspectors cert myself, got a start with SGS NZ as a Welding Inspector / Trainee Radiographer – spent 4 years with them gaining experience in MT, PT, RT & UT and then I was off and flying.
Good luck with your future career,
    Regards,
    BB

Does that mean that you work for yourself?
A lot of blokes are skilling up and working for themselves. Must be where the future is heading..
